A top official of the Department of Health (DOH) has urged the public to cooperate with the health officials in maintaining a healthy environment in their respective localities.
DOH Zamboanga Peninsula Director Dr. Aristides Tan made the call as he noted that the public, like in this city where dengue cases are prevalent, are complacent.
Tan noted that despite the efforts made by the City Health Office, the number of dengue cases continue to rise, citing the residents don't participate actively in the fight against the mosquito-borne illness.
“
The City Health Office is doing their best efforts in cleaning up and destroying the breeding sites of dengue but the people are complacent,” Tan said.
“They (residents) only participate if somebody in the family is already afflicted with dengue,” Tan added.
He said the best way to control if not eradicate the cases of dengue is through environmental sanitation citing the breeding sites of mosquito-dengue carrier must be destroyed.
“We will maximize our staffs in helping the City Health Office in controlling the situation. We will involve everybody,” he said. Dr. Rodel Agbulos, City Health Officer, shared the same view with Tan.
“That's what we have noticed but I think they only need a push to cooperate with us in our anti-dengue campaign,” Agbulos said. He said he has scheduled another meeting with the barangay officials as well as with the Department of Education (DepEd) to raise public awareness in as far as the anti-dengue campaign is concerned.
The meeting will be held next week in the City Health Office, Agbulos said. Latest data from Agbulos' office showed that there are 1,320 cases of dengue with 19 fatalities since January this year. Agbulos said they will do everything possible to prevent the number of dengue cases from reaching an outbreak level. (PNA/PIA9-BST)
