Police and military intelligence operatives arrested a suspected member of the regional terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah and a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, state authorities said Wednesday.
Senior Superintendent Aaron Aquino, Compostela Valley police chief, identified the arrested as Edgar Malaydan Jr, a follower of former MILF 105th base commander Ombra Kato who led atrocities on civilian communities in North Cotabato in 2008.
Joint operatives of the Army's Special Forces Company, police mobile group, 11th Military Intelligence Group and Monkayo town police elements arrested Malaydan in his safehouse in Barangay Casoon at about 6 p.m. Monday on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by 11th Regional Trial Court in Lupon, Davao Oriental.
Capt. Emmanuel Garcia, spokesperson for the 10th infantry Division, said Malaydan did not resist arrest when lawmen presented him the warrants after more than one month of covert surveillance operations.
Garcia said the suspect, also known as "cell leader" of JI in Compostela Valley, was facing several criminal charges that range from kidnapping, bombing and extortion in South-Central Mindanao region.
Known as members of the MILF "lost command group," Malaydan was seen with Kato who carries a P10 million bounty for leading attacks on civilian communities after the Supreme Court nullified an agreement between the government and the MILF in 2008.
He was the second JI member arrested in the region in the past two years.
In 2008, combined state agents nabbed an alleged JI leader in Pantukan town, also in Compostela and known Muslim community where rebels and lawless elements sought refuge to evade manhunt by military in Central Mindanao.
Kato was removed from his post by MILF leaders after the 2008 atrocities.
"He is one of Kato's trusted men who have links with the extremist Abu Sayyaf Group and JI," Garcia said, citing intelligence reports.
He said Malaydan is now undergoing tactical interrogation at a police headquarters in Compostela Valley under heavy security. A military agent close to the terrorist group confirmed Malaydan as JI member involved in the series of bomb attacks in Central Mindanao in 2008.
The JI is an al-Qaeda terror network's arm in Southeast Asian region working with the Abu Sayyaf Group. The MILF, in a statement, denied Malaydan is in the roster of the rebel group. (PNA/PIA9-BST)
