Zamboanga NFA has 600,000 bags of rice reserve stocks

Zamboanga City - The National Food Authority (NFA) has on stock some 600,000 bags of rice in its main warehouse at San Roque and in two other leased warehouses in Zamboanga City.

NFA Provincial Manager Gaudencio Nuega said the NFA warehouse stores about 400,000 bags with 128,950 bags at the Rojo warehouse and 64,000 at the Zamboanga Holdings warehouse.

“We have enough supply of rice," Nuega said. For this year, the NFA has a target quota of 2.4 million bags of rice intended for the entire areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula. So far the NFA has already imported 1,980 million bags to include its 15th shipment the other week.

He explained that the stock of rice in these three warehouses is all new stocks and that when he assumed the office in October last year, there were only 50,000 bags left in the inventory.

In another development, Nuega said that the 1,800 bags of rice that are considered as “boat sweeping rice “ were already sold at P 5 per kilo to a winning bidder.

This so called “sweeping rice” are collected inside the vessels that ferried the rice from abroad and are not fit for human consumption.

Nuega further said that boat sweeping rice are sold to all licensed NFA dealers to include those registered Poultry Hog Raisers (PHR) .

The bidding was done thru the bulletin of invitation as what has been done ever since and not by public bidding which means it was not published in the local dailies .

“Ever since, we done it thru bulletin, it is not being published," Nuega said. (PNA/PIA9-BST)
