MisOC prepares for Pas’ungko Fest

Oroquieta City – With the newly reactivated Provincial Tourism Council of the Governor Herminia Ramiro administration, the province of Misamis occidental is busy preparing for its new festival to promote the province tourism industry, trade and commerce, and its people who want a peaceful and progressive life.

Mr. Gerard Ramiro, who now heads as chairman, the Provincial Tourism Council adopts an twice a month meeting of all the 14 towns of the province and three cities, namely Ozamiz, Oroquieta and Tangub tourism officials to plan tourism activities that can help promote Misamis Occidental.

In the recent meeting held at Kamayan sa Oro Restaurant, the council with Mr. Gain Paul de Barras, Provincial Tourism Officer, presiding in behalf of the Chairman who’s out of town for some commitments led in contemplating to prepare for the upcoming first major activity of the reactivated council.

Pas’ungko (Pasungko) Festival is the festival for one destination, one people, one vision.

Pas’ungko is a Subanen term for the Visayan word “pasalamat” or thanksgiving to the god almighty or the Subanens Magbabaya and usually done in the month of November or December of every year end harvest.

It is a celebration of dance, giving of food, merrymaking and gathering of relatives, friends, and love-ones to celebrate good tidings and good harvest.

Like any tribe and community in whole country celebrate fiestas, foundation days, and Christmas seasons, or anything, and even commemorates somebody’s funeral, the Filipinos always gathered to be one and remembers the past that led to the present time with a joyous diversion and promoting one’s achievement.

Mr. Bonifacio Mente, A Subanen Tribal Chieftain, Gonotan P’lilan of Layawan always dream of unity and joyful celebration that can promote oneness of his tribe and with the Pas’ungko, the Subanen of Misamis Occidental once again celebrates to show to the world that, Subanens is one group of loving and peaceful people.

Celebrations like Pas’ungko should be promoted, like the Subanen’s Buklog or Beklug is not only a celebration but a festival of its own, history, culture, arts, food and other native products, places and events, and even traits’ and character of a person are being remembered and promoted.

Today, with the PTC (Provincial Tourism Council) of Misamis Occidental whose vision and goal is to let the world knows that in this part of Mindanao there is something to remember on for the next generation.

Pas’ungko Festival as it is planned will be on the first week of November, this year not only to promote tourism oriented destinations and events, but to promote friendship, trade and commerce together with it beauties and other personalities of the province.

On the opening day, an Agro-trade fair will be opened for the One Town, One Product (a government initiated program to promote food resource) promotion and technology propagation (hands-on) of native delicacies and other products, and commerce and industry of the province.

On the later part of the weeklong celebrations, the search for Miss Misamis Occidental 2010 or the “Mutya ng Misamis Occidental” were in beauties and talents from the 14 towns ambassadress of goodwill will commence and a coronation night will be held, to be judge who’s who is the prettiest among them.

And in the day of the celebration, cultural presentations will be experienced by the guests and visitors, were the Subanen(lumads) and Christians brothers and other cultural troupes will show their might with the sounds and beats of their indigenous musical instruments’ in a street dancing competition.

Pas’ungko Festival is a festival of Misamis Occidental; A celebration of One People, One Destination, One Vision.

“with this festival, Misamis Occidental again will be in the map of the Philippines Tourism, amidst local peace and order problem, political fracas, and low socio-economic movement, we can say come and visit the new Misamis Occidental” Governor Ramiro said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gerard Hilarion Ramiro, Chairman of the reactivated PTC said, “Pas’ungko festival is the gateway for tourism activity of the province, and this will help promote our destinations, places and its people, trade and commerce will flourish, investors will come and invest, peace and order will takes place, then Misamis occidental is great place to live and enjoy.” He said.
