NFA Zambo now sells fortified rice

Manila Bulletin

ZAMBOANGA CITY - The National Food Authority (NFA) in this city has started to implement the distribution and sale of Iron Fortified Rice (IFR) to the residents of this city.

NFA Zamboanga City Manager Gaudencio Nuega Jr., said his office has started the distribution and sale of IFR since early this month in this city, particularly in the depressed areas or community here.

Nuega explained that the distribution and sale of the IFR is targeted to areas where residents are classified as poor of the poorest in this city.

He said that the IFR contained the needed vitamins for the children whose health conditions have been classified by heath authorities as ''undernourished or malnourished.''

Nuega disclosed that all designated stores in this city are now selling the IFR in their respective communities at P25.00 per kilogram.

As this developed, several poor residents of this city have expressed disgust on why the government food agency has to increase the price of rice sold to them by at least P6.75 per kilogram.

Residents of this city who have been categorized as poor of the poorest by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) cried foul as they urged the new government to continue selling to them the P18.25 per kilo rice.

They said increasing the price of government rice sold them had added more burden to their family that is below the poverty level.

''What most of the residents of our barangay want is for NFA to retain the price of P18.25 per kilogram sold to us,'' Edmundo dela Rosa, 58, a farmer of upper Lapaz in this city, said.

Most of the people in depressed communities here are appealing to the Aquino administration to help them lessen their burden by retaining the price of rice at P18.25 per kilogram.
