ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police have arrested a former vice-mayor in Basilan province for his supposed involvement in atrocities committed by the Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf bandit group.
Chief Superintendent Angelo Sunglao, Directorate for Integrated Police Operation commander in Western Mindanao, said former Maluso town vice-mayor Hamid Muksan was arrested from his hideout in Barangay Port Holland, Maluso town at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Sunglao said Muksan is involved in the bloody Abu Sayyaf attack in 1995 dubbed as the Ipil massacre in Zamboanga Sibugay province.
The bandits torched houses around the town and left more than 50 people deal. The attack was led by Abu Sayyaf group founder Abdurajak Janjalani.
The regional police commander said Muksan also has standing warrants of arrest for his involvement in the infamous Dos Palmas kidnapping and the Lamitan siege. He is also tagged in 2 more kidnapping cases in Basilan province in 1997.
Sunglao said Muksan is also included in the police's most wanted list with a monetary reward of P300,000. -- Reports from RJ Rosalado and Leila Vicente, ABS-CBN Zamboanga
