Oroquieta City – An 11 month baby girl wins the 36th Nutrition Month Celebration healthy baby contest sponsored by the City Nutrition Council chaired by City Mayor Jason P. Almonte in its culmination activity this week.
With 29 healthy babies who won the barangay level contest done last 2nd and 3rd week of the month, Jerlyn Claros, 11 months old won the title “Healthiest baby” after the Board of Judges chose her from the ten finalist who got highest score from the 29 contestants based on 25 percent nutritional status, 25 percent active responses, 25 percent health practices, and 25 percent physical appearance, totaling to 100 percent perfect, Jerlyn wins them all.
The 36th Nutrition Month celebration anchored on the governments program of good nutrition to its countryside is celebrated yearly in the month of July. This year’s theme focuses on “Sa Pagkaing tama at sapat, Wastong timbang ni baby ang katapat”.
Ms. Flor Sarmiento, City Nutrition Action Officer with the Barangay Nutrition Scholars BNS) of every Barangay and its City BNS Coordinator Milagros Ompoc work hand in hand to promote good nutrition as a flagship program of the government to fight malnutrition and with the support from the City Nutrition Council formed to spearhead the government programs, the celebration was a success.
In the said culmination activities, Honorable Jeselie Centino Borbon, Chair of Committee on Women, Gender, Health and Social Welfare who also represents the City mayor and his Vice Mayor Harry Guantero in message said that these year’s theme is a reminder for all families that the responsibility of parents is to maintain and practice of good nutrition to have a healthy family.
Honorable Borbon farther stress that, this is a call especially for mothers or nursing mothers to be a healthy mother too, and by undergoing medical check-up, eating good and quality food, and make the home as happy as it would be, make this community a lively place to live.
“And with the support and commitment of the city government, the City of Good Life will be at its best,” City Councilor Borbon said.
Meanwhile, different awards and recognition was also given to Barangay Burgos as the highest barangay as Best performing in the improved nutritional status of Pre-Schoolers and 9 other barangays namely; Barangay’s Dulian Sur, Buenavista, Talic, Ciriaco Pastrano, Lower Loboc, Canubay, Poblacion Uno, Paypayan and Mobod.
In the lowest prevalence in Malnutrition Rate of the year 2010, Barangay Lower Langcanan was chosen while Barangay Mobod was adjudging Best in Infant Young Child Feeding Program (INYF-BNS Programme). Gifts, plaque of recognitions and allocation of 15 kilos of rice was also given to participants especially the winning babies’ families.
In the healthy baby contest,Dra. Gay Cadorma, Dra. Aillen Jabines and Nutritionist Agnes Tejano-Omega of the MisOC Provincial Nutrition Office were the ones who judge the entries and the other winners were: 2nd Place-John Cagas, 6 months old of Barangay Talairon, 3rd place-Jay Magna-ong, 14 months old of Barangay Poblacion 2, 4th place-Anne Marie Marchan, 10 months old of Barangay Upper Langcanan, and 5th place-Cloe Batoy, 14 months old of Barangay Villaflor.(PJamesTremedal, BNDMisOC-CIB-OCM)
