2 killed, 8 hurt in southern Philippine violence

Gunmen killed a soldier in the southern Philippines, officials said Tuesday, and a 4-year-old died in a bomb attack believed to be linked to a clan feud.

The gunmen ambushed soldiers at a road construction site in Lanao del Sur province, said regional commander Maj. Gen. Romeo Lustestica, killing one and wounding five.

Lustestica said the ambush may have been launched to divert attention from the search for Nuraldin Yusoph, 22, an election official's son who was kidnapped on June 21.

In Maguindanao province, a 4-year-old boy was killed and three adults were wounded when a homemade bomb exploded late Monday in front of a police outpost, said Lt. Col. Benjie Hao, a military spokesman.

Two men riding on a motorcycle are suspected to have planted the explosive in Datu Piang township, he said.

Troops have been deployed in the area because of violence linked to a dispute between two relatives who were rivals in the mayoral election in May, but Muslim rebels are also active nearby.

A mortar round last week killed a child and wounded at least six people, Hao said.

Also in Maguindanao, about 200 armed Muslim rebels burned about 60 small houses in Sultan Sa Barongis Township late Monday. The rebels left after the attack, which caused many villagers to flee, said regional military spokesman Maj. Randolph Cabangbang.

There were no reported casualties. The was believed to have been sparked by a feud between a rebel commander and a former town vice mayor, Cabangbang said.
